Card Ideas for the Handicapped
If you are, or know of anyone who is visually impaired and likes to play cards, there is good news. Browsing the web, you can find cards with Braille as well as cards that are like large print books; they have large numbers and suits imprinted on the cards.

Nearly all of the Braille cards looked at, also had the regular card deck looks of the numbers or faces, as well as the suits. That means both blind and sighted players can play cards together. No one would have an advantage nor a disadvantage.

Large print cards are great for any sighted card player. You may be used to smaller print, but the large print cards are easy to read and should not pose a problem in playing games.

There are other games available as well for people who need Braille or larger print on items like dominoes and dice. There are even poker chips that have Braille imprinted with the colors of the chips so that you can calculate how much you are playing with.

If you have arthritis or other problems preventing you from holding cards in your hand, there are card holders available. You would have to place the cards in the holders, but once there, you do not have to constantly hold them while others are taking their turns.

Card holders are also handy for helping younger children play cards. Sometimes little hands cannot hold as many cards as they need to. This sometimes results in messes and card games that have to be done over if cards are shown to other players.

Card holders come in round holders that you hold in your hands, or longer versions very much like Scrabble tile holders. Those rest on the table so that you do not need to continue holding them as you play.

Automatic shufflers are also available. You place the deck of cards on the machine and turn the handle. The machine does the work of shuffling. Anyone can use it, so whoever is dealing can take advantage of the workload being lifted.

Anyway you look at it, all it takes is some searching for items that are needed, and you will usually find them. Don't give up and you will most likely find what you are looking for on the internet. You can also check with the manager or buyer at your favorite local department store. They could possibly order what you need. It may be a good idea for them to stock a few. You may not be the only person looking for the item.
